There are many ways technologies are involved in the scientific enterprise.Here I will concentrate primarily on the impact of instruments. The purpose of this paper is to explore the development of two classes of instruments - microscopes and telescopes - in the context of the contingencies detailed by the scientific, social, political, financial, historical, geographical and philosophical issues by which their development was framed. My aim is to sample the range of issues, concluding with some observations on the contributions of instruments to scientific change.
