Abstract:

This paper is aimed to discuss some possibilities for a deeper collaboration between linguists and logicians in the field of the logic of natural language. This collaboration could occur in the field of modern generative grammar, a linguistic theory that describes language using abstract structures in a mathematical style. The author argues that the analysis of these problems requires the cooperation between the linguistics and the logicians. The following problems could be considered from this point of view: the description of modality that includes the observer or the source of opinion/obligation, the study of Dative case in Russian and the theory of functional heads proposed by Guiglielmo Cinque.

Keywords:
generative grammar, formal semantics, modality, intensional contexts, dative, second dative, functional heads, Cinque’s universal hierarchy
