Abstract:

In this paper, the philosophical ideology of eclecticism of Modern times is considered, especially as it has been formulated by J. Ch. Sturm, and assessment of its contribution to development of philosophical and scientific thought is given. The need of differentiation of eclecticism, syncretism and conciliatorics is proved. Eclecticism is characterized as a progressive for its time current. He arises as an alternative, on the one hand, to dogmatism and skepticism, and on other hand – to an apriorism of systematical philosophy and syncretism. The spirit of criticism and tolerance, innovation and respect for tradition, historicism and encyclopaedism were characteristics of eclecticism. Eclecticism tried to overcome the unilaterality of philosophical and scientific concepts and to develop complete outlook. Orientation to growth of knowledge is characteristic of the methodological program of eclecticism. Eclecticism developed the hypothetical-deductive model of scientific method, the approximate theory of truth and a new view on system. Eclectic epistemology had innovative character. In eclecticism the scientific community, not reflexing subject, becomes the subject of knowledge, and the knowledge is understood as collective, historical and dialogical process. The science is considered as a component of society, and scientific progress becomes the most important factor of social progress.
